GILLIAM, Eugene Bailey - E.B. Gilliam, retired orchardist, cotton planter and merchant, and well known in this section and in eastern Arkansas, died here Thursday night, April 16, at 1:20 o'clock, aged 75 years, six months and 13 days. Death followed a week's critical illness and resulted from complications following several years suffering from rheumatism. Eugene Bailey Gilliam was born in Davies county, Kentucky, near Owensboro, October 3, 1849 of a southern pioneer family. When a young man he came to Arkansas and became a prominent citizen of Jackson county
with large plantation and mercantile interests at Swifton where he lived until moving with his wife and other members of the family to Bentonville in 1910. Mrs. Gilliam died here on April 19, 1923. Coming to the Arkansas fruit region Mr. Gilliam bought two apple orchards near Bentonville and although he had had no previous experience in the commercial production of apples a persevering application to his new problems and the same characteristics and energies of mind and body that had made him successful in the growing and marketing of cotton and stock and in the mercantile business in his old home county, made him in a position of prominence and respect in his new environment. His liking for and faith in his new home, Bentonville, were also shown by his investments in residence and business properties in the town where he and his family were soon looked upon as a permanent part of the community life. He had been a member of the Christian church since early in life and a member of the Masonic order from his early manhood. He was regular in his attendance at church services until ill health made such attendance impossible. Mr. Gilliam is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Corilla Clymer of Detroit, Mich. and six sons: Otis E., Westville, Okla.; John M., Bellingham, Wash.; Robert L., Bentonville; Embra B., Detroit, Mich.; Paul E., Bentonville and Leon T., Marshall, Mo. and by ten grandchildren. The daughter and all the sons except John M. and Leon T. were here at the end and for his funeral. He is also survived by a brother, Robert L. Gilliam of Owensboro, Ky. who was here for the funeral. A step-daughter, Mrs. J.D. Ashley of West Plains, Mo. and two of her children were also here, coming to Bentonville several days before because of Mr. Gilliam's critical illness. Funeral services were held at the Gilliam home on West E street Saturday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Stephen A. Morton, pastor of the Christian church. Interment was made in the family lot in the City cemetery.
