*Obituary

Billy Potter of College Station, Texas, went to be with his Lord and Savior on October 13, 2008, at the age of 90 years. He was born near Higden, Arkansas, on February 19, 1918. Billy was preceded in death by his parents, Jim and Lillie Potter, two brothers, Jack and Earl Potter, and two sisters, Wilma Turney and Juanita Waters.

He is survived by one sister, Marue Tackett, of Slater, MS. He is also survived by his wife of 66 years, Claudia of College Station, TX, two sons, Gary and wife Charlotte of College Station, TX, and Tim and wife Shawn, of Cleveland, NC, two daughters, Karen and husband Marlin Murphy of Bartlett, TN, and Karla and husband Richard Walker of Springfield, Missouri; one grandson, Bill Doug Potter of Bentonville, AR, five granddaughters, Christy Duffel of Springfield, MO, Stacy Soden of Springfield, MO, Kerri Sagraves of Knoxville, TN, and Kaleigh and Olivia Potter of Spring, TX; three great-grandsons, Matthew and Daniel Potter of Bentonville, AR, and Seth Soden of Springfield, MO, and two great-granddaughters, Christa Duffel of Springfield, MO, and Karly Soden of Springfield, MO; and a host of other family members and friends.

Billy was a veteran of the U.S. Army in World War II, and was a member of that truly "greatest generation" of Americans.

Billy was a retired farmer, cattleman, horseman and heavy equipment operator. He lived his early life as a farmer, stockman, logger and sawmill worker near Higden, Arkansas, spent a time as a railroad brakeman in a copper mine in Morenci, Arizona, and lived and worked on a diversified crops and livestock farm near Jonesboro, AR, for over 20 years. Also, while living near Jonesboro Billy worked as a road maintenance equipment operator for Craighead County. He retired in 1981 and moved to College Station, Texas, where he bred, raised, trained and showed registered, purebred Quarter Horses for about 25 years. Billy was an accomplished horseman and mule man, and was admired by all who knew him for his expertise with horses and mules. He really enjoyed raising foals, training them and seeing them develop into beautiful mature horses. While his family misses him, they are comforted by knowing that Billy has God's angels mounted on better horses for his being There with them.

Among Billy's proudest accomplishments was providing encouragement and support for the education and successes of his children. He stressed the importance of education and hard work to his children, and collectively, his children earned 8 college degrees, including 2 PhD's. Among his favorite pastimes was listening to bluegrass and country music. He was especially fond of fiddle music and bluegrass gospel music.

Billy Potter was a kind and giving man toward all his friends and the wider community. He is sorely missed already.
