Lelo "Lee" J. Gnagey, 104, of Siloam Springs, died Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2009, at Washington Regional Medical Center in Fayetteville.

He was born Dec. 7, 1904, in Milledgeville, Ill., to John and Alice Gnagey. He was an educator for 35 years in Illinois as a football, basketball and track coach, a science and manual skills training teacher, and a principal and superintendent. He was a member of the National Education Association. He was superintendent of school for Benton County, director of the Sunshine School and office manager of Siloam Springs Medical Center. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Siloam Springs.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Virginia Francis Thompson Gnagey; and his second wife, Dorothy Guthrie Mitchell Gnagey.

Survivors include his sister, Evelyn Oncken of Aurora, Ill.; three sons, William Gnagey of Normal, Ill., Larry Gnagey of Jonesboro and Tom Gnagey of Fayetteville; two stepdaughters, Jean Mitchell Treat of Grand Lake, Okla., and Dorothy Mitchell Rogers of Owasso, Okla.; a foster daughter, Claire Biesemeier of Freeport, Ill.; and 38 grandchildren, greatgrandchildren and greatgreat-grandchildren.
