BURKS, Arthur L. - A.L. Burks died at his home in this city on last Sunday morning at the age of 85 years, ten months and twelve days. Mr. Burks had been in very poor health for a number of years and for some time his death had been expected. Mr. Burks was truly a noble man - a southern gentleman of the old school - always kind, courteous, affable and one of the most neighborly men to be found anywhere. Funeral services were held at the family residence on Monday at two—thirty p. m., Reverends W.E. Kimbrough and J.W. Ellis officiating, after which the remains were laid to rest in the city cemetery. We expect a suitable obituary for our next issue. The Democrat joins with the entire community in extending condolence to the bereaved family.

Death has again entered our city and on the 18th day of March 1906, Arthur L. Burks, at the age of 86, passed through that mysterious gate that swings between No More and Forever. The old oaks of the forest are falling; year by year, day by day, the greedy grave is gaping, gaping perhaps for the young, for certain the old. Death, with its ebony wings, broods omnipresent, yet whether it comes for the little white casket or the sable six foot coffin, it is attendant with mystery, heart wounds, and heart bleeding. To the wife, the daughter, the sons, the friends, time alone can serve the balm of Gilead but the world can ill afford to spare the life of this courteous, affable old gentleman whose generous chivalry was born in the good old days of the good old south, and whose bounteous fountain source was a kind and unselfish heart. He was ever considerate of the helpless, devoted to home and home ties, kind to his neighbor, chivalrous to women, firm and honest in dealing, and never forgetting the details of courtesy and kindness, even when disease wrecked and bed-ridden. June 18th, 1851 he was married to Sarah Terry, sister to C.C. Terry of Glasgow, Ky., Mrs. Lou T. Jeffries of Prairie Grove, Ark. and the late Col. W.A. Terry of this place. To this union was born B.T. Burks, W.A. Burks and Mrs. Lizzie Dudley, all of this place. Mrs. Sabina Burks, a daughter-in-law by a former marriage, lives at Los Angeles, Cal. Attended by sorrowing friends, devoted wife and children, he was laid to rest in the I.O.O.F. cemetery on the 19th inst., leaving behind him the record of countless generous deeds engraven on human hearts. "H."
