Dr. Joe David Burnett the husband of LoRita (Thornburg) Burnett. Dr. Joe David Burnett the son of Horace Burnett and Marion (Smith) Burnett.

Dr. Joe D. Burnett, 73, of Mt. Pleasant passed away on Friday, February 3, 2006 at White River Medical Center in Batesville. He was born on March 1, 1932 in Granite, Oklahoma and was the son of Horace Burnett and Marion (Smith) Burnett.

He was a man of phenomenal energy having been a Baptist minister for 50 years, and he taught school for 44 years and served in the U.S. Army for 27 years. He graduated from the Oklahoma State Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary; received a Master's Degree in Chemistry and Religious Education and his PhD. from the University of Missouri in education and chemistry in 1983.

He retired as a Master Sgt. from the U.S. Army. He served during the Korean Conflict in the 45th Thunderbird Division out of Oklahoma as a Tank Commander. He was a man who believed in God first, family second and education. He loved to read poetry and loved classical, country and gospel music. He loved his children and was very proud of them. All of his children entered into the military and three or four of them will retire from the military. His grandchildren also have followed their grandfather's footsteps in the ministry, the military and science. He was a member of the Mt. Pleasant Southern Baptist Church and was a member of various professional, education and religious associations.

He is survived by his wife, LoRita (Thornburg) Burnett.

He is also survived by three sons: Leland Burnett of Warsaw, Missouri, James Burnett of Cabot, Arkansas, and David Burnett of Sierra Vista, Arizona; and one daughter: Mary Qualls of Mt. Pleasant, Arkansas. Other survivors include twelve grandchildren; one brother: Earl Burnett of California; and three sisters: Carolyn Callen of Amarillo, Texas, Betty Titus of Minnesota and Ruth Newhouse of Katy, Texas.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
