Homer Earl Polk was born February 7, 1898 at Decatur, Ark, and died at Ft Riley, Kansas October 10, 1918. His remains were prepared for burial and shipped to Rogers and buried in the city cemetery. We knew nothing of his sickness until a telegram announcing his death was received. Funeral services were held at the cemetery conducted by Rev C A Rogers in the presence of a score of friends and relatives who came to pay the last tribute of respect to the young soldier who had so gallantly laid his life upon the altar, the sacrifice for the cause of freedom. The casket was decorated with a large United States flag and a profusion of flowers contributed by sympathizing friends. The Home Guard was present and assisted in the services. Homer loved his home but he loved his country more. He enlisted on July 1, 1918 and was sent to Fort Logan, Colorado, afterward to Camp Taylor, Kentucky, where he remained awhile and was transferred to Camp Funston, Kansas, where he died. He enjoyed the distinction of being loved and respected by all who knew him. He was made corporal with a prospect of being promoted to a much higher position if he had lived. It is a great consolation to his parents and relatives to know that he lived a true Christian. His little testament and prayer book was his constant companions. He was a member of the YMCA and often spoke of the great work being done by this society. Homer Earl Polk died a hero in every essential sense and was buried with national honors. By his father, John B Polk.
