Born in Tennessee to Isaac and Martha Tunage.
William studied law and passed the Texas Bar in 1857. He returned to Tennessee that same year and married Sarah "Sally" Ann Melton where they moved to Lee county, Arkansas. On July 26, 1861 William enrolled for duty and was mustered into the CSA 8th Ark. Vol. Inf. with the rank of 2nd Lt. After The Battle of Shiloh he was elected to the rank of Capt.
After Sally died in 1877 William moved to Lonoke County. He died in 1889 and was buried in White County.
He was a 32 degree Mason
