Mr. Grady Lynn Gist Sr. departed this life Monday, Feb. 7, 2011, in Carlsbad, N.M., at the age of 82. He was born July 6, 1928, in Marietta, Miss., to Bertha Warren and Thomas Marshall Gist, who preceded him in death along with his four brothers: Howard, Ray, Billy and Quinon. Grady was an avid hunter and fisherman as well as an active member and former president of the Carlsbad Sportsmen's Club. He operated the lab and X-ray department at the Carlsbad Medical Arts building for 35 years and also served our country as a specialty foreman shore man from July 1946 to January 1948. He was awarded with a World War II Victory Medal and an Army of Occupations Medal, Japan.
Grady is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Juanita Shearer Gist; sister, Essie Curtis; children: Grady and wife, Renia Gist, Grant Gist and Cindy Anderson; grandchildren: Kerri, Katie, Kristy and Emily; great-grandchildren: Justin and Brandon; great-great-grandson, Truett; his closest family friends: Tony and Johnnie Becker, Draper and Betty Ann Brantley, Blair and Maren Becker and their children: Brooklyn, Zoe, Leyton, Jenner and Daly; and his loyal Yorkies: Rosie and Bear.
Per Grady's request, there will be a private family service at a later date.
Donations received graciously at Masonic Lodge, First Baptist Church or the Carlsbad Sportsmen's Club.
Hunting, fishing and family sums up Grady's life … not necessarily in that order!
