HINDSVILLE — Jerry Dean Van Winkle, 77, of Hindsville, Ark., passed away March 20 at Circle of Life Hospice in Springdale, Ark. He was born Nov. 29, 1934, at Spring Valley, Ark., the son of George and Myrl Sharp Van Winkle.

While still a young child the family moved to the Mayfield community where he attended school. On June 10, 1955, he married Shirley Teters. After a long battle with cancer, she preceded him in death in 1993. He served in the U.S. Army from 1957 to 1964. He returned to Mayfield to help out on the family farm. In 1966, Jerry and Shirley bought land around Brush Creek and started their own farm.

Jerry held a variety of jobs in town, but nothing compared to being a farmer. So a farmer he was until 1990. They then sold the farm and moved to Springdale, Ark. He started working for the fertilizer plant in Huntsville until health problems got the best of him. They purchased land in Hindsville and built a home there. He spent many hours working in the yard and garden. If he was not found at home, he was probably at an auction or somewhere playing dominoes. He was of the Baptist faith.

He will be missed by his wife, Ruby Van Winkle of the home; his daughter and son-in-law, Sherrie and Bruce Fink of Springdale, Ark.; his granddaughter, Bethany Fink of Fayetteville, Ark.; grandson, Shane Fink of Springdale, Ark.; two stepdaughters and stepsons-in-law, Brenda and Earl Talley and Beverly and Larry Borum, all of Fayetteville, Ark.; four stepgrandchildren, Benjamin Cate, Jason Cate, Shane Cate, Bradley Talley and wife Kim, all of Fayetteville, Ark.; and his best friend, Raymond Sizemore.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 24, at the Spring Valley Baptist Church with the Revs. Brad Redding and Ernie Imler officiating. Interment will be in the Friendship Cemetery in Springdale under the direction of Brashears Funeral Home brashearsfuneralhome.net of Huntsville, Ark. Pallbearers will be: Raymond Sizemore, Johnny Carpenter, Mike Puryear, A.T. Smith, Truman Villines, Rex Homesley, Herb Jordan and R.C. Bolinger. The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to Hyland Park Assembly of God Church Children's Park, 900 N. Crossover Road, Fayetteville, AR 72701.
