Killed in action in a helicopter that was shot down. He was serving as a Specialist Five with B CO, 1ST Aviation Battlion, 1ST Infantry Division, USARV, Army of the United States from Newport, Arkansas. RAY M BARNWELL is on the Wall at Panel 05E Line 112. May his sacrifice not be forgotten.

A casualty of Operation Cocoa Beach, which was a ferocious firefight involving personnel from the 3rd Brigade of the 1st Infantry Division. That event resulted in the deaths of 15 US Army soldiers, 1 Medal of Honor recepient and 2 recepients of the Distinguished Service Cross. It also resulted in the deaths of 199 Viet Cong troops.
