He grew up on his Hallam families' original homestead which his father, as a boy, helped to turn from virgin forest to a very productive farm. He spent his boyhood attending the local one-room school houses in the community before joining the Civilian Conservation Corps "CCC" where he served as camp carpenter at Devil's Den State Park.

During World War II, he served with Company E, 381st Infantry Regiment, 96th "Deadeye" Division from 1942 through 1945, when he was honorably discharged after being wounded on Okinawa. In addition, his division was awarded a Presidential Citation for extraordinary heroism for their actions on the island of a Okinwa.

After returning home, Jim married longtime family friend, Ardith Maxine Christie, on Sept. 7, 1944, in Omak, Wash., where both their families had relocated during the war years. After spending their families' early years in Washington state, where he worked as a mechanic and carpenter, they moved to Arizona for several years before moving to the Berry Branch area outside of Huntsville. The couple moved from Madison County to Springdale in 1971, where the couple lived out their married life together until Jan. 20, 2002, when Ardith passed away.
