BALLARD, Barney Freeman - The entire country-side was shocked to learn of the passing of Freeman Ballard of Gravette Saturday evening, February 16th. Mr. Ballard had only been ill for a short time and his illness was not thought to be of a serious nature until the last few days. He was taken to Siloam Springs Saturday for medical examination and perhaps an operation but the physicians could do nothing for him. His death occurred about ten p.m. Saturday night at his home on East Main Street. Mr. Ballard, together with his family, had been residents of Gravette for the past twenty-five years, having come here from Maysville in 1904. The deceased was a man of true worth, honest convictions, noble character and a sincere friend to everyone. His untimely passing throws a pall of sorrow over the entire community. Barney Freeman Ballard was born on the Ballard homestead just west of Maysville December 12th, 1862 and was one of a family of eight children, two of whom survive him; one brother, Henry Ballard, and one sister, Mrs. Mack Roseborough, both of Afton, Okla. He was married to Mary Ellen Stokes in 1888 to which union were born six children, four of whom survive; one son, Stokes, and three daughters, Mrs. Dean Covey, Mrs. Nelle Clark and Miss Eva Ballard, all living in Gravette. Also four grandchildren. Mr. Ballard was a graduate of the Wooster Academy at Vinita. He was a member of the Presbyterian church and lived a true Christian life filled with many kindnesses. The funeral services were conducted from the home Monday afternoon, February 18th by Dr. T. Marshall Morsey of Siloam Springs and interment was made in the Tinnin cemetery at Maysville where other near relatives who have passed on before now rest.
