CAPTAIN 8th Arkansas Infantry Regiment
Civil War Confederate
January 18, 1826 - July 25, 1901
Confederate Honor Roll Chickamauga
Son of James Adams and Elizabeth Finley Harris. Married Lucy Ann Dillard Nov 22, 1849.
In 1852 he was elected county and circuit clerk of Izard Co., serving two years and in 1856 was elected a second time, holding the office until 1860. In 1860 he was elected Izard County and Probate Judge. He resigned approximately after one year and joined the Confederate Army. In 1861 he enlisted in the Confederate Army as a private in Bowling Green KY. He was promoted to the rank of Second Lieutenant of Comapany D 14th (McCarver's) Regiment of Arkansas Volunteers, Govan's Birgade, Cleburn's Division and Hardee's Corps. He was wounded at Shiloh after which he went home on furlough for approximately three months to recover. He then went back east to the war and was wounded a second time at Franklin. He surrendered at Meridiam, MS in 1865.
He was employed to carry the mail and followed this for seven years, after which he embarked in mercantile pursuits and was so occupied from 1871 to 1872. March of 1877 he was again elected clerk of Izard Co and served for seven years. From 1884 to 1886 he was deputy clerk and in the last year he was elected County and Probate Judge and was re-elected in 1888.
Politically, the Judge was very decidedly Democrat and was one among the prominent men of Izard Co. that the reconstruction act did no leave out in the cold. He was a member of the Masonic faternity, and I.O.O.F. He and his wife were members of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South.
