Mrs. Jane C. Meeker, a well known school teacher of Benton county, died following an operation at the City Hospital in Siloam Springs on Saturday evening, February 7th at 6:45 o'clock. Mrs. Meeker was a native of Ohio and was born in Belpre on July 5th, 1867. When a young girl she came with her people to Decatur which was then known as Corner Springs. Here in this vicinity she grew to womanhood and married John Meeker, making their home some miles east of Decatur. Her husband died about 15 years ago and since then Mrs. Meeker has become an efficient teacher and has taught in many different parts of the county. She leaves four daughters: Mrs. S.T. Corn, Mrs. J.C. Simpson, who live near Siloam Springs; Mrs. Don Van Sickle, Earlton, Kansas; Mrs. C.R. Davenport, Wynnewood, Okla.; and two sons, N.J. Meeker, Decatur and Orval Meeker, who is an instructor in the Centerton school. Funeral services were held in Decatur at 11 o'clock Monday morning and interment was made in the Decatur cemetery. Many people came from over the county to pay their last respects to this friend and teacher, many of whom she had instructed during her years of teaching. Mrs. Meeker was a noble woman with a character of power and influence to overcome obstacles and to be victorious in the face of defeat. The friends and neighbors extend their sincerest sympathy to the children in the loss of their mother.
