Burly P. Thompson, born Sept. 23, 1897, died August 19, 1980 at his home in Melbourne at the age of 81. He was the son of George W. and Nannie Stroud Thompson. He was a Baptist, a retired farmer and a Veteran of WWI. He had spent his entire life in Izard County. Survivors include his wife, Katherine Gillihan Thompson of the home; 4 sons, Burl and Eldon, both of Melbourne, Larry of WA, and Rayorne of CA; 4 daughters, Jimmy Ray Gillihan, Helen Gillihan, Della McCollum, and Melba Collie, all of Melbourne; one brother, Marion Thompson of Springdale, AR; step mother, Miriam Thompson of Little Rock; one sister, Elvie McDonald; also 24 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. Funeral was at Howard Chapel in Melbourne on Aug. 21 at 2 p.m. with Bro. Owen Harvell officiating. Howard Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Burial was in Combs Cemetery. Pallbearers were: Clifton Gillihan, George Gillihan, Junior Gillihan, Remmell Williams, Will Watters, and Charles Smith.
