Enlisted in the US Army on 16 June 1943 and was honorably discharged 11 November 1946.

He was awarded the Purple Heart for injuries he received in battles in Germany. He also, received the European Theater ribbon with three battle stars and also received the Presidential Unit Citation with Oak Leaf Cluster.
