Verna Lee Carter Morgan, 89, of Crossett died Saturday, February 2, 2008. Born in Crossett on May 20, 1917, to Oscar Lee Carter & Maudie Belle Smith Carter, she was Crossett Public Librarian from 1938 - 1943 and later worked in the IBM office. She married Lem Newton Morgan on January 16, 1947. A life-long member of Magnolia Baptist Church of Crossett, she joined Antioch Baptist Church in McGehee after moving to Desha County at the death of her husband in 1996. She was a resident of Crestpark Inn in Stuttgart at the time of her death.
Survivors include two children, Larry Ellis Morgan & wife Debra of Coushatta, LA, and Anna Louise Morgan Bates of Stuttgart; eight grandchildren, John Morgan of New Port Richey, FL, Jennifer Morgan of Coushatta, Danny Chance, Jr., of Dumas, Leslie Chance Paquin of Tillar, Danny Bates, Sharon Bates Harris, & Keith Bates all of Dumas and David Bates of Deer Park, TX; 12 great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Katie Joe Carter Morgan and Billie Carter Fisher & husband Norman, all of Crossett; and a host of family and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, grandsons Patrick Wayne Morgan & John Wesley Bates; sisters Sibyl Carter Berry & Dorothy Carter Deal; brothers-in-law Charles C. Baxter, John E. Harrod, F. Knighten Morgan, Tim S. Berry, and C. Frank Deal, and a son-in-law Lamar 'Monk' Bates.
Funeral services were planned for the Magnolia Baptist Church on Tuesday, February 5, at 3 p.m. with Rev. Billy R. Carter officiating. Pallbearers were to be Chuck Baxter, Paul Baxter, Gayle Deal, Eddie Deal, Don Sullivan, Kenneth Morgan, Dean Holland, Billy Lafoon, Edward Nugent and Terry Welchel. Burial was to follow at the Carter Cemetery under the direction of Jones Funeral Home of Crossett.
