SAUNDERS, Franklin H. - By the death of Franklin H. Saunders at an early hour last Saturday morning Rogers lost one of its oldest and most respected citizens. Mr. Saunders had been in poor health for some time and his death was not unexpected. Mr. Saunders was born in Marine, Madison county, Ill. June 12, 1855 and died at the age of 64 years, two months and twenty days. He was married September 27, 1877 to Miss Ida E. Ellison, also of Marine, who survives him. To them were born six children, five of whom are living, all in Rogers: Miss May Saunders, Mrs. Ora Chapin, Miss Mel Saunders, and two sons, Waldo and Harley. Mr. Saunders came to Rogers the year after the town was platted, in 1882, and has lived here ever since with the exception of a short time spent in Bentonville. In early years, most of his time was spent in the grocery business and when the Democrat editor came to Rogers he was in partnership with S.S. Michael on the corner where the Vandover block now stands. Owing to failing health the family moved to a farm just north of Rogers where they lived for so many years but at the time of Mr. Saunders' death were living at No. 316 North Third street, the old Tebe Taylor place. Funeral services were held at the residence Sunday afternoon at three o'clock and were conducted by Rev. G.G. Yeoman of the M.E. church of which the deceased had been a member most of his life. Mr. Saunders was quiet, unassuming and had a keen sense of honor and honesty, and was ever held in highest esteem by his friends and business associates.
