Roland Smith "Shorty" Blankenship, 81, of Melbourne, Ark., son of the late Commie E. Blankenship and Elmar E. Haynes Blankenship, was born on Aug. 26, 1922, in Bandmill, Ark. He died March 10, 2004, in Melbourne, Ark. He married Zelma Marie Rush Blankenship on Sept. 6, 1942, in Jumbo, Ark. During his working years, he worked as a farmer. He was of the Baptist faith. Survivors include his wife, Marie Blankenship of the home; a sister and brother-in-law -- Shirley and Vohn Weaver of Melbourne, a brother and sister-in-law -- R. J. and Melba Blankenship of Melbourne; and a host of other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers -- Thomas and Jack Blankenship; and two sisters -- Eunice Sartin and Bethel Rush. The funeral was March 12 in the Roman and Billy Howard Memorial Chapel with Doyne Robertson officiating. Burial was at Combs Cemetery. Arrangements were under the direction of Eddie's Family Funeral Home of Melbourne. Pallbearers were Jerry Melton, Chris Blankenship, Clovis Vest, Tim Blankenship, Rocky Campbell and Jim Muncy.
