Robert E. Harrell was born 30 June 1927 in Wynne, Arkansas, the youngest son of Clarence Homer and Myrtle Hemby Harrell. He had one sister, Virginia, and one brother, Clarence Homer, Jr. Robert graduated from Wynne High School in 1945 where he was a member of the basketball and football teams.
Robert was a member of the Air Force Reserve from 30 October 1944 to 15 May 1945. He was inducted into the Navy 29 June 1945 and received training at NTC, San Diego, California. He served at NPSC, NAS, New Orleans, Louisiana and NPSC, Memphis, Tennessee before being discharged 22 August 1946.
Robert married Mary Ann Dye and they are the parents of two children, Robert E., Jr. and Jane. He was employed at Murray Tire and Electric Company and Cargill, Inc. as a salesman before becoming Postmaster of the Wynne Post Office from 1959 to 1993. Robert is a past president of the Wynne Rotary Club; past president of the Arkansas Branch of the National League of Postmasters; was the Worshipful Master at the local Masonic Lodge and is a 32nd degree Mason. Robert was a football and basketball referee for many years and was inducted into Arkansas Officials Association Hall of Fame in July of 1997. Robert was an avid sportsman, enjoying hunting, fishing and playing golf, until his health prevented his participation.
