*Obituary
A blind man, his wife and three children perished early Thursday in a flash fire that destroyed their two-story frame home and a nearby store building.

The victimes were identified as William McElhany, 56; his wife, Mary, 32; twin sons Gary and Jerry, 3 and a 6-year-old step-daughter, Jennifer.

A neighbor, Mrs. Virgie Waters, said she heard an explosion shortly after 6 a.m. and by the time she looked out a window the McElhany home was enveloped in flames. Authorities said the fire may have been caused by an exploding gas space heater.

McElhany, blind and crippled, had been a resident of Corning most of his life, and operated a pool hall in Corning, Ark., until last year. The bodies were sent to Corning Thursday for burial.
The family lived at Neelyville before moving to Poplar Bluff three weeks ago.

McElhany is survived by his mother, Mrs. Gertie McElhany, of Mammoth Springs, Ark., five sisters and two brothers.

Mrs. McElhany's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Scherrer, live in Datto, near Corning. She also has five sisters and five brothers.
