T.W. Akins

BOSWELL, Okla. — T W Akins was born in Boswell, Okla., to Talbert and Margret Long Akins on Jan 9, 1921. He was their only child and died Sept 6, 2010, in the Veteran's Hospital in Fayetteville, Ark.

He and his parents moved to Siloam Springs, Ark., when he was 3 years old, and he lived there the rest of his life, except five years he spent in the Army and one year in St Cloud, Minn.

He served in the Army and became a staff sergeant in G 9th Infantry/Division serving in the European Theatre of WWII. He entered France at Normandy on D-Day +1, and from there went on to earn two Purple Hearts, Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster and three Bronze Stars.

He met and married his wife, Barbra Gean Akins, in February of 1946, and later returned to Siloam Springs, where they raised their three children, Peggy Dorsey (husband Don), Dale Akins (wife Rebecca), Robert Akins (wife Sydney).

They have 11 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Memorial services will be 10 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 9, 2010, at First United Methodist Church in Siloam Springs. under the direction of Backstrom-Pyeatte Funeral Home in Siloam Springs.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to First United Methodist Church, First Christian Church or VFW Post #1674.
