Hugh Stroud, age about 60 years, a merchant of Cave Springs, was drowned yesterday afternoon near his home when he attempted to rescue some hogs belonging to him from the swollen stream which runs near his house. The branch in which Mr. Stroud was drowned is ordinarily a dry branch just north of Cave Springs. Mr. Stroud noticed that the stream was taking a big rise and that some of his hogs would get drowned if not driven out. In his attempts to rescue these it is thought that he became entangled in the barbed wire and was unable to release himself. Hugh Stroud was a cousin of Alonzo and John Stroud of Rogers. His two brothers are George and Leonard of near Cave Springs. Funeral arrangements have not yet been completed.

Funeral services were held Friday in the Cave Springs Christian church for Hugh C. Stroud who met a tragic death on April 4 when he was drowned. The services were in charge of the pastor. The sad accident occurred when he was trying to save his hogs from a similar fate during the hard rain causing the little branch near his home to become a raging torrent. While trying to cross this stream he was washed away and drowned. The funeral was largely attended and was one of the saddest ever held in Cave Springs. Following the services the body was taken to Bentonville for burial. There was a large cortege to the cemetery. Besides his widow, Mrs. Verna Stroud, he is survived by his daughters, Eunice Stroud, Beatrice Stroud and Dorothy Stroud; also by four brothers, George and H.L. Stroud, both of Cave Springs, and J.W. Stroud and A.B. Stroud of Rogers. Mr. Stroud was born in Stoutland, Mo. June 12, 1886. He came to Benton county with his parents when a child and has lived nearly his entire life in this county, residing at different times in Bentonville, Rogers and Cave Springs. He was united in marriage to Miss Verna Grimsley in 1903 to whom five children were born, two dying in infancy. Mr. Stroud owned and operated a store in Cave Springs for many years. Later he purchased the mill there which he was operating at the time of his death. He was very widely known and had many friends who sadly mourn his departure.
