James Luther "J.L." Darling Cossey* born in Independence County and died Tuckerman, Jackson County, Arkansas. James Luther "J.L." Darling Cossey married Nettie Irene (Thornton) Cossey, until his death. Nettie Irene (Thornton) Cossey daughter of Joseph Sidney Thornton and Dollie Ann (Newman) Thornton.

They had 10 children together. Grandpa Cossey said he and his parents, Jacob Rufus and Martha Jane Cossey, were all born in the Batesville, Arkansas and Moorefield, Arkansas areas.

Nettie Cossey
June 28, 1907 - February 12, 2011

Nettie Cossey, 103, of Batesville died Saturday, February 12, 2011 at White River Medical Center. She was born on Friday, June 28, 1907 in Yalobusha County, Mississippi and was the daughter of Joseph Sidney and Dollie Ann (Newman) Thornton.

She was full of life and really loved and cared for her children and grandchildren. She loved to make quilts and clothing for her children, but her number one interest was her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. She was a homemaker and a member of the Quail Valley Church of Christ.

Survivors include two sons: Luther Junior Cossey of Newport and James Cossey and his wife, Sue of Tuckerman; five daughters: Ruby Gillmore of Batesville; Alice Dean of Jonesboro; Bonnie Stephens and her husband, Lehman of Batesville; Lois Hanser and her husband, Paul of Tipton, Iowa; Doris Parker and her husband, Richard of Lawson, Missouri; twenty-five grandchildren; thirty-eight great-grandchildren; and eighteen great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Luther Cossey; three sons: Ray Cossey, Alfred Cossey and Harvey Cossey; one grandchild; and five sisters.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Roller-Crouch Chapel with Burl Young Jr. and Jason Henley officiating.

Burial will be at Bethel Cemetery near Gainesboro under the direction of Roller-Crouch Funeral Home of Batesville.
