Thurman Bennett, Sr. of Quitman, Arkansas, age 96, passed away in his home on April 14, 2011. He leaves behind his loving family and a host of friends.
Mr. Bennett was a lifelong resident of Quitman. He was the manager of the Farmers Co-op of Quitman before retiring. Mr. Bennett was a Mason and a sixty-four year member of Holland Masonic Lodge #158. He was a member of the Goodloe Church at Quitman. Mr. Bennett was a devoted husband and loving father. He enjoyed serving his church, gospel singing, gardening, and telling stories to his friends and family.
Mr. Bennett was born on May 27, 1914, to the late Eligah Sanders Bennett and Etta Bartlett Bennett. He was also preceded in death by three children, Gerald Bennett, Jack Edward Bennett, and Carolyn Sue Govar; one brother, Winfred Bennett; two sisters, Joyce Bennett and Ester Kennedy; and one grandson, Blake Edward Bennett.
Mr. Bennett is survived by his wife of 79 years, Mary Lillie (Love) Bennett of Quitman; four children, Thurman Bennett, Jr. and wife, Shirley, of North Little Rock, Wayne Bennett and wife, Minnie Rae, of Quitman, Marian Kennedy and husband, Stanley, of Quitman, and Terry Bennett and wife, Jackie, of Conway; one brother, Jared Bennett and wife, Stella, of Quitman; daughter-in-law, Linda Sue Bennett of Benton; thirteen grandchildren, David Bennett, Dale Bennett, Karen Reeves, Jacque Reynolds, Jim Bennett, Lisa Shudak, Shuree Carpenter, Rodney Bennett, Cheryl Brannon, Brian Thompson, Josh Kennedy, Justin Bennett, and Seth Bennett; 26 great-grandchildren; and 2 great, great grandchildren. Mr. Bennett is also survived by other relatives and his many friends.
Visitation will be held Saturday, April 16, from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at the Olmstead Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held Sunday, April 17, at 2:00 p.m. in the Olmstead Chapel with Rev. Kenneth Rolland, Jr. officiating. Interment will follow in the Goodloe Cemetery. His grandsons David Bennett, Dale Bennett, Jim Bennett, Rodney Bennett, Brian Thompson, Josh Kennedy, Justin Bennett, and Seth Bennett will serve as pallbearers.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Goodloe Church and Cemetery Fund at Quitman.
