Miss E Lorene Crump of Greenbrier passed away at the Greenbrier Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, shortly after 10:00 a.m., Thursday, August 13, 2009, at the age of 92 years, 10 months and 23 days. She was surrounded by her family, her niece Cynthia Hopson of California and one of her cousins, Gary Linn of Bee Branch. Also present were friends Willard Thorn, Rhonda Garrett and Joy Harrington, all of Greenbrier.

Born September 21, 1916 in Morrilton, AR to the late James Jackson Crump, of Edgemont, and Sallie May Linn of Morganton. Lorene’s mother died early in 1919, in Morganton, when she was two years old. Shortly thereafter Lorene and her older brother Willus Walker Crump, moved to East Shady Grove, in the Greenbrier area to live with her father’s half sister, Inez Karber Chambers, her husband Thomas Chambers and their son, Homer Chambers. Lorene appears in the 1927-1928 East Shady Grove Class photograph.

In approximately 1928 at the age of twelve, Lorene and her brother moved to what is now Hall Dr., in Greenbrier, to live with their father and his new wife, Fannie Opal Thomas Parker Crump. Lorene resided on Hall Dr. until the early 1940’s when she moved with her family to what is now East Main Street, Greenbrier, where she resided until her death.

Lorene graduated from Greenbrier High School on May 13, 1937. For a short while she stayed in Little Rock with her uncle Billy Crump and his wife Lucille, while she worked on the war effort. Lorene returned home to Greenbrier in 1945 to resume work on the family farm.

In the early 1960’s she went to work as a caregiver at the Human Development Center in Conway, working there until her retirement.

In the 1960’s she traveled to the Washington, DC area to visit her brother and his family while he was stationed there, with the US Army. She also made several trips to the San Francisco area, again to visit her brother and his family, after his retirement from the military.

Lorene never married nor had children of her own. She declined offers of marriage to stay home and help her father and stepmother work on the family farm, so her brother Willus, could serve our country in the US Army. His 30 years of service included serving in the WWII, Korean and Viet Nam Wars. He was laid to rest at Arlington Cemetery in early 2005. His distinguished military career was made possible by the support and sacrifice of his family in Greenbrier, especially his sister, Lorene.

Lorene would joke that she never married because she “did not want to be cooped up, cooking and cleaning”. She loved working outside in her flower and vegetable gardens and did so until just 5 weeks before her death, when a fall sent her to the hospital.

Lorene loved her church and was a faithful servant of God. She was a member of the United Methodist Women Mary-Martha Circle at the Greenbrier First United Methodist Church.

She is survived by her niece Cynthia Mae Crump Hopson (Keith) of Lodi, CA; great nephews: Michael Keith Hopson (Tina) of Stockton, CA, Stephen William Hopson (Jenni) of Lockeford, CA and great great-nephews Christopher Ryan Hopson, Andrew Michael Hopson, Zachary Keith Hopson, all of Stockton, CA, Matthew Ray Hopson, William Burness Hopson both of Lockeford, CA and a great great-niece Kayla Ann Hopson also of Lockerford, CA, and numerous cousins and her Greenbrier Methodist Church family.
