Keith Skelton

Keith Skelton, 87, of Springdale died Sunday, March 21, 2004, at Springdale Health and Rehabilitation Center. He was born Jan. 5, 1917, in Black Oak near Winslow to Henry Eli and Priscilla Fay Anderson Skelton.

Mr. Skelton was one of the founding business leaders in Springdale. In June 1951, he established Skelton Brothers Inc. and hauled grade A milk from farm to market in tank trailers. He also operated G&H Bandag Co. Inc., Jeanway Industries Inc., and S&H Parts & Equipment. Skelton Brothers Inc. also manufactured and delivered Boston Mountain ice within a 100-mile radius of Sprirgdale. In the late 1950s through the early 1960s, he and a cousin also operated the area's only bus line service.

Mr. Skelton was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Lena Lea (Jones) Skelton on April 28, 2000, a brother Donald Skelton and three sisters, Louise Gillespie, Blanche Wolfenbarger and Delia Stephens.

He is survived by a daughter, Carolyn Lea Finn and husband Richard of Elm Springs; five brothers, Arthur Skelton of Fayetteville, Quentin Skelton and Lawrence Skelton, both of Springdale, Pierson Skelton of Dutch Mills, Dwain Skelton of Easton, Kan.; two sisters, Naomi Bradley of Searcy, Rose Wagner of Tulsa; two granddaughters, Regina Finn and Rebecca Finn, both of Elm Springs; and a great-grandson, Bailey Finn of Elm Springs.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. today, March 24 at Sisco Funeral Chapel in Springdale with Mr. Larry Branum officiating. Interment will be in Friendship Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to Friendship Cemetery, P.O. Box 1622, Springdale, 72756.

Pallbearers will be Danny Hamilton, Wayne McNeeley, Mark Passmore, Curtis Skelton, James Skelton and Ronnie Skelton.

SPRINGDALE — Lena Lea Skelton, 78, resident of Springdale died April 28, 2000, at Northwest Medical Center. Born Sept. 25, 1921, in Springdale, she was the daughter of Clair and Ruth Forest Wilson Jones.

She was a member of Friendship Baptist Church and presently secretary and treasurer of Springdale Women's Golf Association and one of the founding business leaders in Springdale.

Lena Lea Jones Skelton wrote: "After graduation, I went to Fayetteville Business College and then was employed by Jeff D. Brown Feed & Hatchery during which time I married Keith Skelton on March l4, 1941. We had one daughter, Carolyn Lea; she and her husband Richard Finn live near Elm Springs and have two daughters, Regina Lea and Rebecca Ruth.

"We lived in Tulsa, 1944 and 1945, then returned to Springdale in 1946. Keith worked for W.C. Rogers, and I worked for the Springdale Chamber of Commerce for five years. I then worked for Joe Robinson Produce.

"In June 1951, we organized Skelton Bros. Inc. and hauled Grade A milk from farm to market in tank trailers. I am secretary-treasurer of this corporation, also G&H Bandag Co. Inc and Jeanway Industries Inc. and S&H Parts and Equipment.

"Skelton Bros. Inc also manufactured and delivered Boston Mountain Ice within a 100-mile-radius of Springdale.

"We have traveled several places, but ones most remembered are when we flew from New York to Amman, Jordan; a cruise on the Pacific Princess from Acapulco to Los Angeles and a week in Honolulu, Ha.

"We lived on Shipley and Sunset streets in Springdale for 30 years until 1987 when we built a new home at 409 Lakeview which we are now enjoying very much.

"Being married and working together for 48 years, we have had lots of good times and some bad ones, but all in all it has been a good life.

"We have a farm so Keith can have his cows and I can enjoy playing golf, and we can keep up with the University of Arkansas Razorbacks, especially basketball and football.

"I still go to the office each day and hope to be able to do so for some time to come. Keith had a stroke in September 1981 but he is still able to drive and carry on his work and activities."

Survivors include her husband, Keith Skelton of the home; one daughter and son-in-law, Carolyn Lea Finn and Richard of Elm Springs; one brother and sister-in-law, Jack Jones and Sophia of Springdale; two sisters and one brother-in-law, Frances Hamilton and John D. and Betty McNeely all of Springdale; two granddaughters, Regina Lea Finn and Rebecca Ruth Finn of Elm Springs and a host of friends and fellow golfers.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday May 2, 2000, at Sisco Funeral Chapel with the Rev, Don Elmore officiating. Burial will be in Friendship Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Danny Paul Hamilton, Nick Jones, Randy Janes, Wayne McNeely ,James Skelton and Ronnie Skelton. Honorary pallbearers will be Springdale Men's Golf Association and Springdale Women's Golf Association.

Visitation will begin at 3 p.m. today at the funeral home, with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday.
