At the age of 100 years, one month and 26 days. John Wiley Day died at his home in Gentry last Sunday, death being the result of old age. Funeral services were held from the Carpenter Mortuary yesterday afternoon with interment in the Gentry cemetery, Rev. A.N. Stanfield officiating. The deceased was born in Culpepper Co., Va Sept 8, 1828. When 5 years old he moved with his parents to Marion County, Mo where he grew to manhood; was married to Susanne Hitch and reared a family, 2 of whom survive him - John T Day of Bickleton, Wash. and Mrs. Belle Wiseheart of Kirwin, Kan. Later he went to Minnesota and enlisted in the 8th Minnesota infantry, was sent with his command up the Missouri and Yellowstone rivers to look after the Indians who were very troublesome at that time.The command was in the northwest a year and then was sent south and engaged in the battles of British Crossing and Camp Stoneman. He served his country nearly 3 years; was discharged in New York and from there went to Van Buren Co, Iowa where some years later he married Emmaline Babbs and 3 daughters of this union survive him - Mrs Frances White, Floydada, Texas; Mrs H M Eads of Rolla, Mo and Mrs Mary Schoonover of Gentry. Traveling was his delight as long as he could travel alone and he visited many states during the past fifty years.

DAY, John Wiley - The desire of John W Day of Gentry that he might live to vote for one more president was not granted by his Maker. He died two days before election at the age of 100 years, one month and sixteen days. He is said to have been the second oldest man in Benton county, Uncle Wade Sikes being a little older.
