Kirby L. Estes

FAYETTEVILLE — Kirby L. Estes, 70, of Fayetteville passed away Friday, Jan. 4, 2008, at Washington Regional Medical Center.

He was born to Glenn D. and Anne Blake Estes on Nov. 28, 1937, in Compton, Calif.

He moved to Fayetteville with his family from Laredo, Texas, in 1949. He was a 1956 graduate of Fayetteville High School and served in the U.S. Navy. He held bachelor of arts and bachelor of architecture and landscape architecture degrees from the University of Arkansas. He was an artist and a pianist. After his retirement, resumed a second career as a published writer and a poet which culminated in his being named Fayetteville's first poet laureate in 2006.

He was predeceased by his parents and brother, Glenn D. "Buddy" Estes Jr.

He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Martha Hogan Estes, of the home. Three daughters, Mary Ellen George (Clinton) of Fayetteville, Sophia Estes (Vickie Kelley) of Fayetteville, Stephanie Spencer (Robert) of Mason, Ohio, and his sister, Marianne Fletcher (Jimmy) of Fayetteville.

He is also survived by eight grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren, 10 nephews and nieces, and a large extended family.

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Moore's Chapel of Fayetteville. The Rev. Steve McClain will officiate.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Shiloh Museum, 118 W. Johnson, Springdale.
