Lee Allen Gibbons, 78, of Bigelow passed away in his home following a courageous battle with cancer Sunday, Feb. 7, 2010.

Born Sept. 13, 1931, in Bigelow, Lee was the son of Charles E. and Opal Brown Gibbons.

He retired after a distinguished career from the Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department.

He served on the Board of Directors of Chart Bank in Perry County, the University of Arkansas Community College at Morrilton and was recently appointed to the Arkansas Alternative Energy Commission.

He was past president of the Little Rock Toastmasters, a member of the Bigelow Masonic Lodge and served as Perry County’s campaign coordinator to elect President Bill Clinton.

He was a proud member of the Bigelow Baptist Church.

Survivors include three devoted daughters, Cindy Brackett and husband Bobby of Bigelow, Rhonda Pinkett and husband Mike of Conway, and Mitzi MacFarlane and husband Scott of Little Rock.

He is also survived by eight loving grandchildren, Joshua Grafton of Bigelow, Cory, Emily, and Hope Brackett of Bigelow, Kate Pinkett Jones and husband Dustin and Stacy Pinkett, all of Conway, and Hunter and Hailey MacFarlane of Little Rock.

Lee had one precious great-grandson, Nathan Brackett of Bigelow. He also leaves behind two sisters, Wanda Tullos of Ashdown and Mary Porterfield of Maumelle.

Some of the things he enjoyed doing with his children and grandchildren included attending their varied sporting events, playing the card game “pitch”, and playing kickball and horseshoes in his pasture. His active life included playing semi-pro baseball, golfing, horse racing, politics, mowing and cooking the best hams on Earth.

The celebration of Mr. Gibbons’ life begins with a visitation from 5-7 p.m. today at Harris Funeral Home in Morrilton.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Bigelow Baptist Church with Dr. Bill Brown and Pastor Cary Condray officiating.

Burial will follow at Volman Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.
