SUMNER, Mary RIDDLE - Funeral services for Mrs. Mary Riddle Sumner, who died at her home here on A Street, S.W. late Friday, September 13th, 1929 following many years of invalidism, were held Sunday afternoon at the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, conducted by the pastor, the Rev. R.S. Hayden, assisted by the Rev. A.W. Henderson, pastor of the Bentonville Presbyterian Church. Interment was made in the Bentonville cemetery beside her daughter, the late Mrs. J.J. Britt. Mrs. Sumner, who was a daughter of W.T. and Sarah E. Riddle, was born in Monroe County, Mo. October 7th, 1856 and lacked but a few days of being 73 years of age when the end came. She was married to J.R. Sumner in 1880 and to this union seven children were born. Two died in infancy while a daughter, Mrs. J.J. Britt, died here at Bentonville 20 years ago and a son, C.F. Sumner, died at his home at Vinita, Okla. three years ago. The three children surviving her are Mrs. Willie McAmis, Mrs. John B. Howard and Ernest R. Sumner, all of Bentonville. She is also survived by one sister, Mrs. J.R. Wood of Springfield, Mo., by one brother, M.W. Riddle of Bentonville and by a number of grandchildren and nieces and nephews. The family moved to Bentonville from West Texas about 35 years ago and Mrs. Sumner has resided here since that time, drawing to her a great number of friends in spite of the fact that for many years, due to her affliction, she had been unable to take an active part in affairs outside of her own home. For about 15 years Mrs. Sumner had been an invalid and confined to her home and her room. For the past eight years she had not been able to walk as the result of rheumatism. In early childhood she professed faith in Christ and united with the Presbyterian Church. After moving to Bentonville she united with the Methodist Episcopal Church, South and was a member of that church to the end.
