GRIFFITH, Samuel J. - Samuel J. Griffith, a resident of Mason Valley for 40 years, died at the home of his son, Sam Griffith, Jr., east of Gentry on Monday May 19th, 1924 at the age of 80 years. Death was due to a complication of diseases. Funeral services were held the following day and were conducted by Rev. John Scoggin of Decatur in the presence of a large number of old friends and neighbors. Interment was made in the Coffelt cemetery. Mr. Griffith was born in Iowa in 1843 and came to Arkansas when a young man. He was in the Civil War and was wounded at the battle of Prairie Grove. For a number of years he taught school and later served as a justice of the peace in Mason Valley. He was also an active member and Sunday school superintendent of the Mason Valley Baptist church. Owing to ill health in late years he has been forced to give up these activities. He is survived by two children - Samuel Griffith, Jr. with whom he made his home, and one daughter, Mrs. Roy Schreier of Centerton.
