Roy N. Sanders was born 24 November 1915 at Delaplaine, Arkansas, the son of Henry and Rosa Cornfell Sanders. He was raised with four brothers: Jack, E.A. (Aden) and Eldon who were twins and Leo along with one stepbrother, Bryan Ragsdale and two sisters: Daisy and Sadie. Roy completed eight years of schooling and worked as a day laborer prior to going into the Navy.

He served on the USS New York 20 October 1935 to 27 June 1936 plus the USS Tanager; USS Heron; USS Henderson; USS Brittern; USS Black Hawk; USS Salt Lake City and the USS Pearl Harbor. Roy drove a P .T. boat ferrying fighting men from the ship to the beachheads. One time, he was caught between the boat and ship and had his chest crushed. He served, also, in Pearl Harbor; Manila; Chefoo; China; Australia and Normandy. While in Normandy, Roy and his brother, Aden, met unexpectedly. There were three Sanders boys in the Navy at the same time.
