LEFORS, W.C. - W.C. Lefors died at his home in Decatur, this county, last Saturday evening at 8:00 o'clock after a lingering illness of a few weeks. The remains were brought to this city and interred in the Odd Fellows cemetery on Monday at noon. Mr. Lefors was one of Benton county's most prominent and influential citizens. He came to Benton county in 1854 and had resided here continuously up to the time of his death. He was widely known, not only in this county, but all over the State. Many county offices had been held by him during his early days and he made an excellent and efficient officer in each instance. Next week we will publish an extensive notice, giving a history of his life.

LEFORS, W. Carl - Captain W. Carl Lefors, the subject of this sketch was born in Scott county, Ky. June 25th, 1830 and died at his home near Decatur, Benton county, Ark. April 28th, 1900. He was married to Miss Martha L. Hale in Texas in 1850 and made a widower in 1886. He moved to Benton county, Ark, in 1854 and to Bentonville in 1869, living there until 1885 when he returned to his farm. In August 1863 he enlisted in Co. F., Second Ark. Regiment Cavalry, U.S. Army. As a testimony of his soldierly qualities he was mustered out of service as Captain of his company. He was elected Sheriff of Benton county in 1868, serving until Jan. 1873. He was by appointment Treasurer of Benton county for two years and elected Mayor of the town of Bentonville for one term. He could have been Sheriff for another term had not his noble spirit and his love of fairness intervened. There had been some irregularity in the vote at Bloomfield and by throwing out the vote of that township, which the election commissioners wanted to do, it would have elected Lefors sheriff; but he told the powers that they could count him in but no power on earth could force him to accept the office on a technicality. This act alone should halo his memory in every heart that loves justice. He was not a man of commanding appearance yet he was a leader of men by reason of mind over matter. His wit, humor and genial manners made him a welcome visitor in any company. His friends were not confined to any one political party or sect. Though a gallant Union soldier he had a host of friends among the ex-Confederates. I wish it were in my power to do his simple nature, his plain unassuming manners, his generous charities to the poor, his steadfast friendships, his love of family, his tenacious adherence to principle, his love of duty, his loyalty to country, his great mind, his exalted sense of fairness, his lofty spirit such a homage as they merit. He believed and practiced the plain way of life, scorning every sham and vain pretense. In harmony with his living, he requested that his remains be conveyed to the family vault without stopping for any of the ceremonies usual to the dead. The many robes of office fall about his memory spotless. I, his friend, believe the world could follow him to that unknown bourne to their eternal welfare. A Friend.
