PINEVILLE — Lawrence Victor Klein, 92, of Pineville died Tuesday, March 20, 2012, in Calico Rock.

Born Oct. 18, 1919, in Tampa, Kan., he was the son of George and Mary Schwemmer Klein. He attended high school in Winfield, Kan., where he was involved in athletics as well as academics. He was a member of the 1939 Kansas state high school basketball championship team. He attended St. John's and South Western College in Kansas, where he earned a bachelor of science degree, and Emporia State, where he earned a master's degree in physical education.

In 1943 he enlisted in the U.S. Army and was assigned to the 2nd Infantry Regiment, which fought during the Battle of the Bulge in Europe. He was united in marriage to Joyce Whitfield on July 24, 1959, in Olathe, Kan.

During his 33-year teaching career, he taught health, physical education, driver's education and science and coached basketball at Burden, Kan., De Soto, Kan., Gardner, Kan., and Calico Rock. He was active in community affairs, serving as a former Pineville city councilman. His hobbies included fishing, quail and pheasant hunting, golfing and gardening. He was an avid high school and college basketball fan. He enjoyed watching the St. Louis Cardinals and the Kansas Jayhawks. He was of the Lutheran faith and was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church in Mountain Home.

Survivors include two sons, Brent Klein of Northfield, Minn., and Ron Klein of Pineville; a brother, Lloyd Klein of Udall, Kan.; a sister, Evelyn Hacker of Syracuse, Kan.; and five grandchildren, Kyra Klein, Joel Klein, Libby Klein, Noah Klein and Jordan Klein.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 52 years; a brother, Herbert Klein; and a grandson, Justin Klein.

Pallbearers were Dan Lindsey, Joel Klein, Noah Klein, Eric Estes, Scott Whitfield, Carl Winters, Don Dvorack and Jerry Klein.

Honorary pallbearers were Kyra Klein, Libby Klein, Jordan Klein and Rex Whitfield.
