Lawrence E. "Elmer" Turner was born 4 June 1922 in De Witt, Arkansas, the son of H. H. and Bessie Dallas Turner. Elmer grew up with three brothers and one sister: Henry, Cora Lee, Edgar, and Bobby. He attended schools at Crocketts Bluff, Arkansas and St. Charles, Arkansas and worked on a farm. His family moved to Cross County in 1942.
Elmer was inducted into the Air Force 4 November 1942 at Little Rock, Arkansas and was trained as a Airplane Propeller Mechanic and Sharpshooter -Carbine. He left the States 18 December 1944 and arrived in the South Pacific 23 January 1945, where he participated in two campaigns, the China Offensive and the Central Burma. He was returned to the States 11 January 1946 and was discharged 20 January 1946 at Camp Chaffee Separation Center, Arkansas. Elmer had earned the World War II Victory Ribbon, the Good Conduct Medal, the American Theater Ribbon, the AP Theater Ribbon and two Bronze Service Stars.
Elmer married Lucille Henson and they had three children, Gary, Jan and Randy. He worked as a farmer and brickmason before retiring in 1980.
Lawrence E. Turner died 4 January 1988 and was buried in Cogbill Cemetery in Wynne.
