PROMINENT ROGERS MAN SUCCUMBS TO DISEASE

Newton W. Walker, widely known civic leader and secretary of the Rogers Chamber of Commerce, died at his home there Friday afternoon at the age of 56 years. He had been ill for the past two months.

Funeral services were held at the home Saturday afternoon, the Rev. Father Marmon of Eureka Springs, conducting the services. Well known businessmen acted as pallbearers. Burial was made in the Rogers cemetery.

The funeral was largely attended. Many representative men as well as members from the Chamber of Commerce of Northwest Arkansas, members of the CWA and FRC committees were also present.

Mr. Walker was born near Boonville, Mo. In 1908 he married Miss Rose Cleary of Shelbyville, Ills. To them was born a son, Jack Walker, who has looked after his father’s work during his last illness.

Before coming to Rogers about 10 years ago, Mr. Walker serviced as secretary of the Chamber of Commerce in Purcell and Okmulgee. Since 1925, he has been secretary of the Rogers Chamber of Commerce. Since last fall, he has been active in federal relief and federal reemployment work. His death was a severe loss to the entire Rogers community.
