One of the earlier units formed in Greene County during the Civil War was a thirty day company formed at Gainesville by Cpt JOHN L. KUYKENDALL. This unit was on duty at Pocahontas, AR for thirty days during the period 10 Nov 1861 to 9 Dec 1861.
The 30th Arkansas Infantry Regt, CSA (This unit was reestablished at Gainesville, AR in mid-1862 after the Union troops took control of the Mississippi River at Memphis, TN, separating some officers from their units which were East of the River.) Cpt JOHN L. KUYKENDALL was the officer in charge of forming this unit.
