The Springdale News
Friday, February 24, 1899
Rev. John Calvin King, aged eighty-one years, died Tuesday morning at half past one o'clock at his home in Springdale. The deceased had been sick only a short time, having been taken with la grippe a few days ago, but his constitution was not strong enough to resist the attacks of the disease. Funeral services were held at the residence Wednesday at 12 o'clock, conducted by Rev. J.E. Wylie, pastor of the Presbyterian Church, after which the remains were interred in Bluff Cemetery. The deceased was born in Kentucky but went with his parents to Indiana when only seven years of age. After remaining there for some time he went to McDonald County, Illinois where he spent part of his life. For fifty years he was a preacher of the gospel and a faithful follower of the teachings of his Master, being a member of the Presbyterian church. He has been a resident of Springdale for over two years, having come here for the benefit of his health. He made many friends among the people here. His wife, aged eighty years, survives him and she, too, is quite sick. They have only one living child, a son, D.H. King, who also resides here and he and his mother have the sympathy of the entire community.
