DOWNEY, Eli - [from Eagle Corner) Ely Downey passed away last Thursday night at 11 o'clock. Mr. Downey had been sick for some time, he was 78 years of age, he came here in the early days and had lived in the same house a number of years. He was a christian man and a good neighbor and well liked by all who knew him. He leaves a wife, two sons and three daughters to mourn his departure. They have our heart felt sympathy.

Eli Downey departed this life March 25, 1926. He was born July 10, 1847. At the age of 13 he, with his parents, went to Vernon county, Wis. At the age of 17 he enlisted with Co. I, Regiment 12, Wis. Volunteers on February 20, he was discharged on July 15, 1865 and he was married to Miss Lucinda Philpott on Sept. 9, 1866. To this union six children were born, one son died in infancy, five children survive him. Barton Downey, Marcella Brown of Mason Valley, Easter Rone of Springtown, Mansel Downey of Rogers and Mary Williams of Fai, Calif., all of whom were present at his death. He, with his family, moved to Benton county, Arkansas in the fall of 1874 where he resided until the time of his death. He is also survived by one brother and one sister, John Downey and Mary Reid, both of Veduga, Wis. In his early manhood he obeyed the gospel and always lived a devoted christian life which has been spent in his duty to his family and to his God. Uncle Eli, as his friends loved to call him, was loved and respected by all who knew him, he was never known to waver in his faith or in the discharge of his duty.

Eli Downey, father of Mansel Downey of Rogers, died Thursday, March 25th at his home at Mason Valley, on the west side of the county, at the age of 78 years, eight months and fifteen days. He was a native of Ohio and at the age of 13 moved with his parents to Vernon county, Wis. February 20, 1864, at the age of 17, he enlisted in Co. A, 12th Wis. Inf. and was honorably discharged July 16, 1865. He was married to Lucinda Philpot September 9, 1866. To this union six children were born, one son dying in infancy, and his wife and five children survive him; Barton Downey and Martilla Brown of Mason Valley; Ester Rone of Springtown; Mansel Downey of Rogers; Mrs. Mary Williams of Ojai, Calif., all of whom were present at his death. He is also survived by a brother and sister, John Downey and Mary Reed, both of Vironqua, Wis. In his early manhood he obeyed the Gospel call and had since lived a devoted Christian life, spent in doing his duty to his family and to his God. Uncle Eli, as his friends loved to call him, was loved and respected by all who knew him.
