JONES, Columbus L. - C.L. Jones, manager of the Fair Store, died at his home in Bentonville on Monday, January 7th, 1924 following an illness of nearly three months. While his recovery has been doubtful for some time pneumonia set in last Saturday and owing to his weakened condition he died two days later. His death was a shock to our city. Mr. Jones was taken ill last fall with typhoid fever after returning home from a business trip. The fever was of a baffling nature and one that physicians could not seem to check. Funeral services were held at the Christian church Wednesday and the pastor, Rev. S.A. Morton, paid a splendid tribute to the fallen member of his church. Out of respect to Mr. Jones the business houses closed during the funeral hour and the church was filled to its capacity by his many friends who had gathered to pay him their last tribute. Columbus L. Jones was born in Limestone Valley in Newton county, Arkansas on May 15th, 1872. When 15 years of age his parents moved to the Northwest and after staying there only eight days concluded that Arkansas was the best place after all and moved back, settling in Western Grove in the same county. Later Mr. Jones opened a general merchandise store in Western Grove and afterwards located in Harrison. About six years ago he became connected with the Fair Store Corporation and became manager of the Berryville house. Three years ago when this company opened its Bentonville store Mr. Jones came here to manage it. In 1892 Mr. Jones married Miss Maggie Truitt of Western Grove. To them was born seven children - two sons, Reuel of Oklahoma City and Bernard, who has managed the store during his father's illness; also five daughters, Esther, Agnes, Lillian, Gladys and Irene, all of whom live at home. He is also survived by four brothers, D.C. Jones of this city; J.K. Jones of Harrison and W.R. and J.N. Jones of Ashland, Okla., and one sister, Mrs. Sarah Chambers of Woodward, Okla. Mr. Jones was a true Christian and practiced it in his every day life. He was chairman of the board of the Christian church of this city and a member of the city council which passed a resolution of respect at its meeting Tuesday night. In the death of Mr. Jones Bentonville has lost one of its best citizens and the family a kind and loving husband and father. The bereaved ones have the sympathy of the entire community.
