Florence Elva Spence Chilton
COVE CREEK — Florence Elva Spence Chilton, 81, of the Cove Creek Community near Prairie Grove died May 23, 2002, at Washington Regional Medical Center in Fayetteville. She was born Sept. 28, 1920, in Pittsburg, Kan., to Robert Roy and Inez Elva Barnett Spence. She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Prairie Grove. She enjoyed learning and the outdoors. She served for many years as a Girl Scout leader and a camp counselor. She accompanied her husband as his work took him to three continents and more than 20 countries. She enjoyed experiencing new cultures, food, music and friends. She taught Mah Jong, batik, African musical instruments and Chinese cooking. In the 1980s, she and her husband moved to the Ozark hills. She studied wildflowers and shared her knowledge with faculty members and students at the University of Arkansas. In her mid-60s, she took college botany to better understand plants.
Surivors include her husband, Maurice Udell Chilton, of the home; four daughters, Ann Wilcox of Los Angeles, Calif., Nancy Warmack of Lincoln, Pat Potter of Houston, Texas, and Rosalie Pipkin of Owasso, Okla.; two brothers, Don Spence of Peoria, Ariz., and Davld Spence of Harvest, Ala.; two sisters, Evalyn Gragg of Winton, Calif., and Mary Lou Dunlap of Ramona, 0kla.; 11 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the United Methodist Church in Prairie Grove with the Rev. Joe Sherman officiating. Burial will be at Garrett Creek Cemetery.
