Ex-Fayetteville Woman Dies In Oklahoma Crash
Mrs. Buena Carney Spence, 49, of San Antonio, Tex., formerly of Fayetteville died in an automobile accident near Kowa, Okla, Saturday. She was a passenger in an automobile driven by her husband, M-Sgt. Melvin Virgil Spence, 53, which collided with one driven by Richard Charles Kramer, 31, of Warren, Mich.
The Spences had been visiting in Fayetteville during the holidays and were en route to their home at Fort Sam Houston when the accident occured.
Spence and the couple's 18-year-old daughter, Rebecca, were seriously injured. Spence suffered multiple fractures and is hospitalized in McAlester, Okla. Rebecca suffered a neck fracture and is in an Oklahoma City hospital.
Mrs. Spence was pinned in the wreckage for more than an hour after the accident on a rain-slick highway.
The Kramers were hospitalized in McAlester and their three children were treated for minor injuries.
Mrs. Spence was born Nov. 23, 1918 in Fayetteville, the daughter of Charles and Lillian Carney. She was a graduate of Fayetteville High School and a member of the First Christian Church.
Survivors in addition to her husband and daughter include three brothers, Charles Carney of St. Louis, Henry Carney of Colorado Springs, Colo., and John Carney or Fayetteville; three sisters, Mrs. Bonita Ivey of Anaheim, Calif., and Mrs. Ada Jarnagan and Miss Fiorence Carney both of Fayetteville and her mother, Mrs. Lillian Carney of Fayetteville.
Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the First Christian Church. Burial in Fairview Cemetery under direction of Nelson's Funeral Home.
