Col. Lawrence Granville Brown, U.S. Army retired, 88, of Springdale passed away Monday, Oct. 3, 2005, in Fayetteville. He was born Jan. 11, 1917, in Marion County, W.Va., to Virgil and Lydda Evaline Morris Brown.

He was a retired colonel in the U.S. Army, serving during World War II in the Aleutian Islands for three yeas and combat duty during the Korean War. He commanded the 32nd Field Artillery Unit in Fort Riley, Kan.; served as the assistant Army attache in Vienna, Austria; professor of military science at the University of Arkansas ROTC and special service officer for the U.S. 8th Army in Korea. After retirement, he worked as the director of placement for the University of Arkansas. He is a graduate of Fairmont State College in Fairmont, W.Va.

He was a member of Central United Methodist Church in Fayetteville. Sons of the American Revolution, Fayetteville-Springdale Elks Lodge, Acacia Masonic Lodge 157 in West Virginia, Retired Military Officer Association and the 7th Infantry Division Association.

He is survived by his wife, Ruth Brown; one daughter, Nancy Owens of Springdale; one brother, Walter Brown of Fairmont, W.Va.; two granddaughters, Laura Haselhorst and husband Paul of Fayetteville, Carrie Owens of New Orleans; two great-grandsons, Kyle Lawrence Haselhorst and Ian Robert Haselhorst.

Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. today, Oct. 6, at Nelson-Berna Funeral Home in Fayetteville. The family will greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m.

Graveside funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Oct.7 at Fairview Memorial Gardens in Fayettevale with the Rev. J. Anthony Holifield officiating.

FAYETTEVILLE — Ruth Winifred Tederick Brown, 92, died Friday, Jan. 9, 2009, in Fayetteville. She was born July 15, 1916, in Mannington, W.Va., to Harry Hamilton Tederick and Laura Isabelle Brantner.

She was a graduate of Fairmont State College, Fairmont, W.Va., with a degree in elementary education and taught in the nearby school systems for five years until rejoining her husband after his return from overseas assignments in World War II, after which they lived in numerous locations. Mrs. Brown was a member of Gamma Chi Chi chapter, Phi Mu sorority; Order of the Eastern Star and of the First Christian Church in Fayetteville.

She lived in Fayetteville since 1961, after serving with her husband in the diplomatic service with the U.S Embassy, Vienna, Austria, from 1958 to 1961, at which time Colonel Brown was assigned to the military science staff of the University of Arkansas. She participated in the Faculty Wives Club and sponsored many military cadet wives activities.

She was preceded in death by her husband, retired Army Col. Lawrence G. Brown.

She is survived by her daughter, Nancy Brown Owens of Springdale; granddaughters, Laura Annie Owens of Springdale and Carrie Beth Owens of New Orleans, La., and great-grandsons, Kyle and Ian Haselhorst and her sister, Helen Brantner Tederick of Fairmont, W.Va.

Private graveside services will be held Monday with entombment in Fairview Memorial Gardens in Fayetteville.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association.
