He grew up around Chattanooga, Tennessee and served during the Civil War in the 1st Tennessee Cavalry Regiment (CSA). He was captured in the Battle of Piedmont, Shenandoah Valley VA on 5 June 1864. He was taken with 500 other prisoners to Camp Morton, Indianapolis, IN, until March 1865. At the end of the war, he ws returned with hundreds of other southern soldiers to be released at Richmond, VA. He then footed it home to Tennessee. Gooden and his wife Pelemela Josephine Richey moved from the Chattanooga area to Arkansas via a wagon train in 1870. They first lived at Alma then Cedarville. Gooden died on 27 Nov 1886 of pneumonia but his wife Pelemely died much later on 3 Jan 1938. (from Paul Campbell research) All of his children are linked to him.

Pelemla "Lem" Richey grew up around Chattanooga, Hamilton county, TN. She was the daughter of Elizabeth Francis Hale Richey and Sanford Richey. Its not known at this time where they are buried or exactly when they died. She had several full siblings and several more half-brothers and sisters from her mother's first marriage to William Hale. Lem learned to play the accordion and fiddle and enjoyed playing those instruments for gatherings. She was talented at crocheting, tatting and embroidering as well. Her husband was a soldier in the Civil War. She later told that she stayed at his parents' home waiting to hear word of him for many months. She had given him up for dead but after the war ended, he returned home having spent time as a prisoner of war. Mr. Campbell died in 1886. Mrs. Campbell then divided her time between her living children and stayed with different ones until her death. At that time she was living with her son Arthur, a veterinarian at Prairie Grove, Arkansas. All of her children are linked to her.
