*Obituary
Madison County Democrat
November 1917

Madison County Youth Accidentally Killed---Otis Acree, the 17 year old son of Dr. Walter Ennis and Zora BROWN Acree of Marble, was accidentally shot and killed Thursday of last week at Joplin, Missouri, the tragedy occurring at the home of Frank Whiteley, formerly of Marble. The particulars, as the Democrat understands them, are that Otis and Earl Whiteley, a younger brother of Frank, had been tinkering with an empty revolver; that the weapon had been laid aside or handed to Otis and Whiteley had stepped out of the room to get a drink of water; that during Whiteley's absence some one loaded the revolver and placed it on a table; that when Whiteley returned he playfully picked up the revolver and deliberately pointed it at Otis and pulled the trigger. The awful result is told above. The ball struck the unfortunate boy a short distance above the heart and he was soon dead. Dr. and Mrs. Acree were immediately notified that their son was fatally shot and they hurried to his bedside as rapidly as automobile and railroad train could convey them but Otis died before they reached him. His remains were brought to Marble Saturday and were interred in the Alabam cemetery Sunday afternoon. One of the largest crowds ever assembled there was present at the funeral. Otis was well known in Huntsville, he having attended school here last spring, and the grief stricken family has the sympathy of everyone in this
great sorrow.
