MELBOURNE – Charles Edward Cheatham, 83, of Melbourne died Thursday, Nov. 25, 2004, in a Calico Rock hospital.

Born Jan. 9, 1921, at Knob Creek, he was the son of Robert Thomas Edmond and Sarah "Sadie" Forrest Cheatham. He taught school for two years at Knob Creek and Jumbo and served six years as the Izard County treasurer and 30 years as the Izard County circuit and county clerk. He was a member of the Melbourne Lions Club where he served as secretary/treasurer for over 40 years, was chairman of the Izard County Democratic Committee, served on the Arkansas State Democratic Committee and was president of the Izard County Historical Society. He served on the original foundation board for the Independence Regional Museum, was a member of the Northcentral Arkansas Development Council for 12 years and served on the North Arkansas Electric Cooperative for many years. He was a member of the Belview Baptist Church where he was a deacon and a Sunday school teacher for many years. He served as treasurer of Rocky Bayou Baptist Association for 24 years.

Survivors include his wife, Mildred Rheudean Musgrove Cheatham; three sons, Ronald Cheatham of Batesville, Donald Cheatham of Melbourne and Lonnie Cheatham of Lone Rock; a daughter, Connie Moser of Calico Rock; a sister, Pearl Rush of Melbourne; four grandchildren, Bradley Cheatham of Nashville, Ashley Dellinger and Jason Cheatham, both of Melbourne, and Kasey Moser of Calico Rock; a great-grandchild, Haley Cheatham; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and six sisters, Bertie Knowles, Effie Lawrence, Novella Gossage, Lola Tidwell, Pearl Roddy and Zelma Cheatham.

The funeral was at 2 p.m. Sunday at Belview Baptist Church in Melbourne with Doyne Robertson and Raymond Carneal officiating. Burial was in Page Cemetery near Melbourne with arrangements by Howard Funeral Home in Melbourne.

Pallbearers were Wayne Wilson, Kevin Johnson, Tom Teague, James Sitton, Jerry McFarland, Bob Morris, Glen Williams and Gray Dellinger.

Honorary pallbearers were J.R. Knowles, Gail Knowles, Darrel Knowles, Bill Knowles, Delano Roddy, Loye Lawrence, Wade Rush, Leon Gossage and Leonard Gossage.
