Thomas “Sarge” Turner, 73, of Newark passed away on Tuesday, December 6, 2005 at his home.

He was born on December 15, 1931 in Fulton, Arkansas, the son of Claude Turner and Mamie (Brown) Turner. He retired after 19 years as the greens keeper at the Municipal Golf Course in Batesville which he helped to build. He was a member of the VFW in Pleasant Plains. “Sarge” retired from the U.S. Army after serving for 22 ½ years. During his time in the Army, he served in the Korean War and the Vietnam Conflict. He never met a stranger. “Sarge” loved to play golf and raised his kids on the golf course. He enjoyed gardening, playing poker, lecturing and telling war stories. He was a jokester and loved novelty toys. He liked to make birdhouses and trunks as a craft. “Sarge” always pulled a dollar from behind the ear of children and his favorite saying was “Once you get knowledge in your head, no one can take it away from you.” He was of the Baptist faith.

He is survived by his second wife, Lula (Caraway) Turner of Newark; his daughter: Alma Lee Clark of Mountain Home; his stepson: Thomas Wayne Vinson of Texas; and two step-daughters: Laura Leigh Duncan of Newark and Becky Davis of Casa Grande, Arizona. His two brothers, Charles Albert Biddle and Jimmy Dale Biddle both of Alaska; his sister, Ruby Nell Blake of Batesville also survive him. “Sarge” is also survived by his granddaughter, Laura Lee Tolleson of Mountain Home and his step-grandson, Nicholas James Duncan of Jonesboro. He is also survived by his special friend and sister-in-law, Maxine Combs of Conway. Other survivors include several nieces and nephews and many other friends.

Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Bonnie Turner; a grandson, Thomas Roy Rogers; three brothers, Robert Turner, David Turner, and Harrison Turner; and two sisters, Ina Marie Biddle and Gertrude Turner.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, December 9, 2005 in the Roller-Crouch Funeral Home Chapel with Lee Clark officiating.

Visitation will be on Thursday from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m.
