John Adair served as a pvt in Co F Nichol's MO Cav. He was wounded during the Civil War and returned home to be treated. Bushwackers came to his home one day and took James and his son John from their home to a cave on Gaither Mountain. There they tortured and killed them. Women bought them by ox cart and buried them in the Gaither Cemetery.
