Services Held For Mrs. Clarence Floyd
by Frankie Thompson

Sarah Jane Barnes Floyd, a daughter of the late John and Mahala Lawson Barnes was born at Violet Hill February 9, 1881 and passed away at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Willie Langle, in West Plains, Mo., July 28, 1959 at the age of 78 years, 5 months and 19 days.

She was married at Violet Hill in 1901 to Clarence Floyd who survives her. Mr. and Mrs. Floyd were the parents of six children, three of whom survive her, while three preceded their mother in death by several years. The deceased children are: Irene Floyd, Mrs. Stella Cook and Fred Floyd, a casualty of World War II. Those children surviving their mother are: Mrs. Willie Langle (Lottie) of West Plains, Mo., Mrs. Elmer Johnson (Oda) of Tipton, California and Alton (Bill) Floyd of Violet Hill. Other survivors include two brothers, Theodore Barnes of Sage and Jeff Barnes of near Oxford; one sister, Mrs. Maybelle Haynes of Amarillo, Texas; eight grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren, numerous nephews, nieces, other relatives and many friends.

Mrs. Floyd became a Christian and a member of the Baptist Church when only seventeen years of age and remained ever true to her faith in Christ. She was a faithful and dutiful wife, a devoted and loving mother, a beloved sister, a kind friend and neighbor and a true Christian. As such she will be greatly missed in the home, the community and the Church. The lovely floral offerings, together with the vast assemblage of people attending the services quite adequately bespoke the love and esteem in which she was held by all who were privileged to know her.

Memorial services for the deceased were held Thursday afternoon July 30, at Spring Hill with the Rev. Hugh Cooper and the Rev. Remmel Rowden as officiating ministers. The prelude, “What a Friend We Have in Jesus”, was played by Miss Frankie Thompson, who serves as pianist. The memorial songs, “Precious Memories,” “Shake Hands With Mother Again”, and “Farther Along” were directed by Vernon Wells. Following the services burial was made in the churchyard cemetery by Carter Funeral Home of Salem with Al Pomeroy in charge.

Casket bearers were: Elvis Abbott, Lawrence Wood, Clarence Blevins, Noble Rowden, Lawrence Moser and Eddie Dillard.
